Car Owners Will Be Obliged to Update Cryptographic Protection of ERA-GLONASS Regularly

Сryptoprotection used by GLONASS not only will increase the price of corresponding devices installed on new vehicles, but will also force car owners to undergo annual updating procedure – reports newspaper "Izvestia".
Cryptoprotection is using encryption in order to protect insurance companies from possible frauds in the streamlined process of accidents registration with the use of European Accident Statement. It is known that beginning with 2016, ERA-GLONASS will be the only legitimate system able to register the fact of a road accident.
Car owners will have to take care of the state of their digital signatures. As mentioned earlier, it would have to be changed every year. There will be two ways of doing it: individually or by contacting specialized services, acting as an intermediary. Annual update will cost no less than 2 thousand rubles.
Because of all the improvements, the cost of ERA-GLONASS devices might also increase twofold.
According to the statement made by Yevgeny Belyanko, vice-president of non-commercial partnership GLONASS, it is now known that the indicative cost of ERA-GLONASS equipment per one vehicle is 4 to 5 thousand rubles. Consequently, the complete product will cost approximately 8 - 9 thousand rubles (without installation and initial adjustment).
Beginning with October 2014, motorists in Moscow, St. Petersburg and the cities’ regions can count on the maximum limit of compensation in the amount of 400 thousand rubles. In order to get the compensation, drivers are obliged to provide insurance workers with photo and video materials from an accident scene, provided that the coordinates of an accident are confirmed with the help of global positioning satellite equipment. Beginning with January 1, 2016, this innovation will be introduced in other regions of Russia.
