Localizing safety system installed at the Leningrad nuclear power plant

Leningrad NPP-2 reports of completed assembly and installation of sprinkler system at the first power-generating unit. The system is composed of four rings of steel pipes mounted in the dome of the inner containment shell. Sprinkler holes are protected by melting plugs. In case of emergency (i.e. temperature and pressure rise in the power-generating unit), the plugs will melt and release streams of boric acid solution. The total weight of pipelines is 20 tons, and the weight of the entire dome is 173 tons.
In addition, Leningrad NPP-2 dome is now equipped with the third-class security ventilation system that is designed to cool the central machine room by means of air recirculating and cooling.
A representative of contracting organization "TITANVENTECH" working on the construction of Leningrad NPP-2 said that the company employed argon-arc welding specialists and ventilation systems mounting experts. The workers installed about 98 km of stainless steel equipment totaling in weight 1.5 tons. The assembly of steel structures, installation of sprinkler system, cable framework and ventilating systems mounting was carried out at zero level.
"We were working when the reactor dome was on the ground. The assembly had to be carried out in a space-limited environment as the ventilation equipment needed to be installed between the shell and the sprinkler system. Thus, the first part of our work is now done," – Eugene Lysak, area №2 engineer told to RUBEZH. He also added that the entire structure is a very serious system, which in addition to the third-class security has the first earthquake resistance category, so the requirements for the structure are special.
“TITANVENTECH” representatives noted that the installation of the entire system comprises three stages, and the next stage will take place on the building of the reactor itself after the installation of the dome is finished. In the nearest future, the company's employees are planning to begin installation of ventilation systems of different categories in Leningrad NPP-2 nuclear island.
